I am directed by the Secretary of State for India in Council to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated the 22nd instant, enquiring, with reference to a communication received from Commander Dawson, R.N., as to the effect and working of an Order issued in Bombay in 1882 with the view of restricting Sunday labour in the harbour.
In reply I am to state that from the number of cases of Sunday work reported to have been allowed in each year it would appear that the Order has produced a distinct effect, though not so great as at first seemed likely.
Should Commander Dawson be disposed to examine the figures in detail, I am to suggest that he should be invited to call at the Revenue and Statistics Department of this Office.

Colonial Office.
